In 2014, India had fewer users. Only about 250 million used the internet. In just ten years, this figure quadrupled. This positions India strongly. It is now the second-largest telecom market globally. Several key factors drive this surge. Affordable data plays a big part. Broadband infrastructure also expanded widely. Therefore, connectivity reached new heights.
Factors Fueling Digital Expansion
Cheaper Data and Calls: Mobile data costs plummeted. It was ₹287 per GB in 2014. Now it’s just ₹9 per GB. Call rates also dropped dramatically. This makes connectivity accessible to millions.
Broadband Boom: Broadband subscribers soared. They increased from 66 million in 2014. Now, they are 940 million in 2025. Improved network coverage helped. Faster internet speeds contributed too.
Rural Penetration: Rural India drives much growth. It now holds over half of all internet users. Government initiatives played a role. PM-WANI scheme increased public WiFi. These hotspots are in rural areas. This boosts digital inclusion significantly. Thus, more people access the internet.

Despite achievements, challenges remain. About 45% of India’s population is offline. Lack of digital literacy is a cause. Awareness or device access are other reasons.
