Billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced his departure from the Trump administration, stepping down from his role as a top adviser to President Donald Trump just one day after publicly criticizing the president’s signature legislative proposal, known as the “big beautiful bill”.

Musk, who led efforts to streamline federal bureaucracy as a special government employee, posted his decision on X, his social media platform. “As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,” Musk wrote. “The @DOGE mission will only strengthen over time as it becomes a way of life throughout the government”.

A White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed Musk’s exit. The timing of his departure closely follows his pointed remarks about the centerpiece of Trump’s legislative agenda—a sweeping bill that combines tax cuts with enhanced immigration enforcement.

In a recent CBS interview, Musk described the legislation as a “massive spending bill” that would increase the federal deficit and “undermines the work” of his Department of Government Efficiency, known as DOGE. “I think a bill can be big or it could be beautiful,” Musk said. “But I don’t know if it could be both”.

Musk’s criticism resonated with some fiscal conservatives, with Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) expressing sympathy for Musk’s concerns. President Trump, responding from the Oval Office, defended his legislative approach, acknowledging the complexities of political negotiation and suggesting that further changes to the bill were still possible.

Musk’s tenure in the administration was marked by efforts to reduce wasteful spending and overhaul federal bureaucracy. His departure comes amid external pressures, including protests at Tesla dealerships and a decline in vehicle sales, though it was his disagreement with the president’s legislative priorities that ultimately precipitated his exit.

The impact of Musk’s criticism on the legislative process remains uncertain, but his exit underscores ongoing divisions within the administration over fiscal policy and government reform.
